The obnoxious use of all caps in this post title is because

So I actually made it past 100 followers today - so I decided that this was the perfect number at which to launch the re-design of my blog. This is what it used to look like

I really liked my last layout, I had gone from a really hectic banner to a suuuper simple, as fond as I am of it I found it a touch too simple.

Also, I've been feeling way more girly lately, more so than I felt during the winter anyway. I'm craving pastels and florals and pretty skirts and dreamy designs, in ALL aspects of life! (Which is ironic considering my job requires me to wear all black with a green apron, ohhhhh well!) I wanted my layout to reflect ME more, and I'm really happy with what I've come up with :D

The banner illustration was hand drawn/painted then scanned, as well as the "Kitty Snooks" part, it was lots of fun - definitely want to do more hand drawn designs in the future!

(There I go with the cap locks again).
I've seen a lot of link-up features on others' blogs where readers are invited to participate in the theme of their feature and their link would be featured on the writer's post! So I've decided to start organizing one myself. The feature is:

Now. It's not the truth or dare we all played when we were young (and still play sometimes) where you have to kiss someone on the cheek, reveal your most embarrassing story(no promises though) or anything else, but this is how it would work. Every week, if you choose to participate, you will pick one of the following and do a post about it:

• A Truth Question: Pretty much a writing prompt, some sort of question for you to answer in a post on your blog!

• A Dare: Most likely these will include a photo challenge of sorts, or an outfit challenge, or something totally random! Nothing too gutsy or embarrassing, just something fun!

And of course, leave a link back to the original Truth or Dare post from here!

Whenever I do a post and you wish to participate, you would simply leave a comment with a link to your post and the NEXT truth or dare post I will include your link in the post! I will also pick a "WINNER" every time with whomever I believe went the most full-out with their truth or dare. This person will get featured in the next week's post. This is obviously for fun and there are no real "prizes" but I think it'd be really interesting to see who picks what and how they choose to approach each challenge!

What do you say? Would you like to participate? I have a pilot-tester set of challenges for you guys this week! Here they are:

Truth: What is your favourite childhood experience/memory? Write about it, and include a photo of you as a child!
Dare: I dare you to do a combo outfit post. Grab your significant other, a sibling, a parent, or a friend, and feature them in an outfit post on your blog!

I really hope you guys choose to participate, and I really look forward to see what you come up with if you do!

And what do you think of the layout? Like it? Any bugs or suggestions?!
I wrote a lot in this post but, there was a lot to say so, I hope you've all had a wonderful weekend!

A Sick Kind of Lately

Lately, I have been quite ill and unable to shake this cold! I do wonder if it has been my own fault for keeping myself so busy, but you see, things have been SICK in the awesome way too!

Check out what has come in the mail recently!

I ordered this adorable dress from Sam Wish a while back, she's got a series of "Back to the basics" dresses that she's made with recycled/repurposed fabrics and I just thought that this flamingo print was so adorable! Once the weather gets warmer I am SO pairing this with a belt and wearing this 24/7!!

And the extra plus side?
Sam is the sweetest girl and I ADORE her blog! So I'm absolutely thrilled to have supported her shop AND received an amazing dress ;)

I also won a giveaway a while back - "The Cute Giveaway" by Jules! Jules is a fellow Toronto blogger and is absolutely the most positive joyful person I've encountered through blogging! I was SO stoked to win this giveaway, I mean just LOOK at all that adorable loot! And on top of that the awesome packaging. Made my day!

And last of all, just some instagram shots from lately. Study notes, a pedicure, a LOT of puppy love, a dress I didn't buy, and some other random daily happenings!

So exams are over, spring is (sort of?) here, and I'm still getting used to having free time when I'm not working! It always feels like I have SOMETHING to get done, some assignment to work on, some sort of deadline. But uhm. Not at the moment no! Though I do have a lot up my sleeve that I've been working on in the place of school work! ;)

I'm also off to a sort-of-interview for a second job in a few hours..... I guess I'm in for a busy summer (but I kind of like it that way ;) hehe)

Hope your weeks are off to a good start!

VLOG: 5 Things I Learned this Year

Last night I wrote the very final exam for my first year of university! It's pretty cool to be done, to be FREEEEE for four months!! I'd say more about it all, but here's a video instead! In my very first Vlog I share the 5 things that I learned from my experiences in first year!

This is what I've learned, what I believe, and my opinions might be very different from those of others, they might be wrong (hey, I'm still learning!!) But I hope you'll be able to take away at least a little something from it :)

Keep in mind I filmed this after my 5:30 AM shift and my cold is still not entirely gone, and don't mind my totally awkward goofiness at the end or how long it is(oops) OR how many sayings I say wrong ("Stay in Tune!" really Katia.....)  - but enough with excuses & apologies, I kind of really enjoyed doing a Vlog! And now that I'm done school I have time to do them, so why not? Would you guys like to see more vlogs? Or should I stick to writing ;) !

I think the Vlog says it all (and more), so I'll end this post with a question:

What 'life lesson' so to speak have you learned recently?

Secrets of Spring // photos.

I find this time of year the absolute most beautiful. So naturally my camera gets whipped out way more than it does during winter. Here are some results of a very camera-happy katia!

 My lovely mom!

We went for a walk on a beautiful rainy day....

A spot of yellow.

I have loads of studying to do still, so I'll leave it at that for now.

Illustration: Vintage Girl & A White Picket Fence

(Clever title right?)
As I go through my day a thousand various images get thrown at my brain and I always wonder just how directly it subconsciously affects my artwork.

I was painting yesterday, and I began to wonder where this particular image came from, and through an unnecessary amount of self analyzation (because I'm a cool kid) I realized that I was seriously inspired by Emma from The Fiercest Lilliputian. She's got this incredible vintage style and has the most unique outfit posts / blog.  I love her style and her honesty and down-to-earth attitude. So once I pinpointed this inspiration, I rolled with it! I definitely tried to put some of that vibe into this illustration.

8.5" x 6.5", watercolour, micron pen, prismacolor marker on watercolour paper.
(Copyrighted to Katia Engell)

Just goes to show how inspiring the blogging world really is, whether we realize it right away or not!

This particular piece was meant to be a practice piece for poses and watercolour technique. I'm trying to get more varied in my images because I find I often draw the same 'head'/face over and over again.
Time to add some bodies to these heads of mine!

In other news; I've made some drinks at work now, and I've memorized how to call them out and all the abbreviations for the various drinks, syrups, customizations, etc etc etc. I swear it's like studying for a school course.... except the result is deliciousness in a cup and a paycheck! Woot!

Nifty Thrifty & Easter Weekend!

Hi everyone! I've been meaning to share thrift hauls on here, because I'm quite the avid thrifter and I get SO excited about the things I find... but there are some people who don't really understand secondhand shopping so they'll politely let me have "squee!!!" moments however, I think it'd be nice to have some fellow thrifty bloggers squee with me too!!

Anyway, this is my latest thrifting haul - can you tell I'm ready for spring?!
The most beautiful mint green heels, casual but cute and potentially dressy heels!

I wore this blouse for easter today with a high waisted pant, isn't the pattern super pretty & the colours so warm and sunny!

This blouse was really awkward to photograph because the front parts are long to tie together, so I'm just showing the pattern! It'll be perfect for some summer beaching.

I'm pre-stocking my imaginary future kitchen for next year. This glass was just too tropical and irresistible!

So I'm probably most excited be these crocodile earrings. HOW funny are they? I think they're so funky and I can't wait to wear them - maybe with something contrastingly classic and simple? Woo!

Anyway, I hope you've all had a great easter! Here's a few shots from my weekend via instagram!

My weekend's cut short a bit (others have tomorrow off too - boo!) Because I have a final critique with a prof, then I start my training at work! So excited!

Happy Easter everybody! I hope it was filled with chocolate and lots of love!

A Reflective Kind of Lately.

This month/week brings the end of my very first year of University. It's..... surprisingly anticlimactic. But I think that's partly because I'm bewildered by how quickly it's gone by. I feel like so much has changed yet so little really has. I've learned so much yet I feel like I'm still exactly where I was last year - even though I know I'm not. This isn't all bad or anything - apparently where I was last year isn't such a bad place, in fact life is pretty great!

I think I just need a change. I can feel it - I always know I'm in a bit of a rut when I start really wanting to change my hair colour again. I'm not going to because I'm determined to grow it out - but damn am I wanting fire truck red or lavender or turquoise. Hmphm.

Anyway, I've been focusing on my last few assignments and makin' them rawkin, might as well finish the year off with a bang right?! I've got a few posts up my sleeve, I'm thinking of doing one on 5 things I've learned this year - things that could apply to all of life, not just for university kids. Would you be interested in something like that? I don't usually do those kinds of posts but I think I'd like to!

And since I hate posts with no photos. Here is a photo of my friend Anna and I. We like cats. And she has an app on her ipod that lets you paste cats on your photo. And then I used this hilarious japanese-y site called puricute to kawaii it up.

We are mature adults finishing our first year of university - can you tell?
