Lit Chic 01 // A Casual Vacancy

"Lit Chic"

It sounds like another terrible stereotypical label. I mean, why does one have to establish that they are both a bookworm and chic at the same time? But in this context, I'm simply merging two things I love into one - books and fashion! I want to read more this year (as per my 19 before 20 list) and thought I'd start doing little book reviews, and make little outfits to go with the book too ;)! Book covers are one of my favourite kinds of design - there's so much out there and so much beautiful work (and some not so beautiful, but that's besides the point!) Making outfits based off them, as well as the feel of the book, is fun!
So here's my first post on my new Lit Chic feature, starting with a review and outfit for J.K. Rowling's 'A Casual Vacancy'.

I was curious, and got the book for Christmas. There was so much buzz about Rowling's first attempt to break away from the Harry Potter series. Many people were bashing it, but I decided they might have simply been expecting something more Harry-esque from her, and that it might be worth a read anyway. And it was!

I mean, in all honesty, I don't think Rowling's actual writing is remarkable. There were many blatant sexual references in the book that felt so... out of place I suppose. And I felt it was an obvious attempt to make the book more 'adult'. However - she is an AMAZING story teller. The best comparison I can make this book to is that of a TV series. There are many characters, many points of view, and many intertwining stories that all work together and come together beautifully. You become attached to the characters as they make their way through the story. You hate them at times, love them at times, feel bad for them at times, get angry at them at times. There's no denying that Rowling creates these worlds and fills them with some wonderfully developed characters.

The book has some politics, some romance, some scandal, a little bit of everything and it was really enjoyable and easy to read! I would recommend it if you aren't looking for anything too thought provoking and just sort of fun and engaging to read!

New York City!

Hey everyone!
I'm back from my reading week break - I took some time to just relaaaax after my trip to NYC. Lately I've been feeling the need for down time, for 'me' time. Time to just zone out from everything and do a little bit of nothing for a bit. Except maybe watch 3 seasons of Breaking Bad in 4 days.... hehe. I was never much of a me-time person before, but I guess things change!

New York was fantastic - I want to go back already! 3 nights was NOT enough. I felt like we didn't do nearly enough (because there's so much to do!) but we actually did! I went with my best friend Tiffany, and it was my first time travelling without my parental units. Me being me, I was nervous. Like, REALLY nervous. The type of nervous that makes me fidget like a squirrel on caffeine. Something about the actual getting there, the transportation, the "Where do I go when I get off the plane in this airport I've never been in and how do I get from the airport to the station IN nyc? And then how do I find a cab and how am I not going to get lost and end up on the other side of the world by accident?" makes me nervous. Needless to say, it wasn't that hard to figure out, and I am pretty stoked that I didn't get lost or die or lose Tiffany. And it was fun!!

Without further ado,
Here are some pictures!

Grand Central station! So beautiful, the movies don't show the outside of it often enough.

Eating breakfast across from Grand Central (our hotel was very close, and we beat the crazy line up! It was out the door when we left, Woot!)

Tiffany (who came with me). We got some pretzels in central park! We figured if there is any time to be cliché, New York is the place to do so!

Dinner at Hard Rock Cafe! A restaurant of impressive size. My veggie burger was deelish.
(Oh yea, I'm vegetarian now. Surprise!)

In the giant Toys R Us, they had a STARWARS SECTION. I was beyond stoked! There were too many Starwars related situations in New York. I think that city and I were meant to be....

We spent a LOT of time just walking around, soaking it all in. We lucked out with the weather - it was cold but not the type of cold where all you can think about is how cold you are. The sun was out, no rain, no snow. Apparently it rained the day after we left though!

The view from Central Park. Ahhh!

Selfes in the washroom because the light was so nice in it. And we are selfie whores. Whatevuh!

Central Park. It was quite a social experience - all sorts of tourists asking each other in various international accents to take a photo of them with their friends. I liked it!!

We had amazing luck on the trip. The hotel staff gave us free Wifi simply because we asked... The flight attendants gave us extra snacks. We missed almost every big line up for anything. We got some good deals on I <3 NY tshirts, and we didn't encounter any issues while travelling at all! And Tiffany is the greatest person to travel with ever. I feel like the whole trip went on without a hitch, it was just the perfect little get away!

I also bought lots of awesome clothes. On sale. Yep. Life is good.

A Thought or Two // Growth.

Personal growth is relative.
Sometimes we grow and we grow and we grow, and we don't even realize it until we compare ourselves to the people around us - some who are also growing, some who have already grown, and of course, some who seem to be taking their time at growing.

It's kind of like with height. When you see your cousin for the first time in 6 months and he's suddenly taller than you. Or when you realize at a concert that, for the first time ever, you're not the one on your tippy toes trying to see over everyone else who's taller than you.

Except personal, inner growth, isn't quite so visible.

I find that every time we go through little 'mental growth spurts' we have this underlying feeling of having lost ourselves. And if you think about it? We have. The person we used to be doesn't exist anymore. That person has become a platform made up of all the persons you used to be that supports who you are now. You are different than you were. You have grown, and it takes some time to readjust and formulate a new understanding of yourself.

It's OK to feel a little lost sometimes, because when you find yourself again you might find something brand new and exciting.

Lately In Instagrams

My lovely cousin Alice and her fiancé Kevin at Alice's art show last weekend! Such a great evening, I am super proud of her and loved her artwork!!

I'm just being inappropriately punny here. Kiss and ride for free! Hash tag awkward.

A friend from higschool who now lives in Singapore visited us for a month! I only got to see Jess once while she was here but it was sooo nice to catch up and see her!

My cousin Ben's amazing band, Running Violet, performing at Cherry Cola in Toronto a few weekends ago. No, my cousin (on the left) does not have a mohawk, it just looks like he's really punk rock in this.

My pet rat, Macy Baby, passed away last week. She was such a sweetheart and I will miss her loads. RIP Macy Baby <3

Got my pug shirt in the mail. My life is complete now guys.
And of course, hanging out with the usual goofballs (looking exceptionally silly here). Spontaneous hang outs with Zach and Marvin are always the best. We went to see Gangster Squad - which wasn't particularly good in my opinion (though I do love me some Ryan Gosling.. mm!).

We also saw a guy in the subway walk along the platform with blood all over his face, turns out he head butted his girlfriend. We don't know if it was on purpose or accidental, or what the heck happened, but it was kind of spooky to see someone look like they'd just committed murder...

So yep, life's pretty average lately (in a good way, things are good!) just getting through days of school, staying sane by seeing my friends, and working on the weekends. I am going to New York with my friend Tiffany next weekend though! I'm so excited, it's going to be an adventure!

How have you guys been?
